MoD Must Haves: nendo deep sea glass table

MoD Must Haves
stylish, modern, novel
for glass lovers

One of my favorite materials is glass. Today, there are so many different options to choose from as new advancements in technology move forward. Architects and designers continue to push the envelope and are using glass in design and architecture in avant-garde ways. In collaboration with the company Glasitalia, Oki Sato, chief designer and founder of nendo has shown that glass can be manipulated in color and cut in an ingenious way.
His glass furniture table called "deep sea" emphasizes the spectrum of blue with the use of mirror and fuses and layers colored film onto multiple glass surfaces.

See the gorgeous images...

The perception of depth is beautiful....

I'm smashed by how the shade of blue deepens and intensifies as your eye moves down each successive piece of glass.

Electroluminescent lighting by Joe Doucet

 photo: Kendall Mills

Love meeting new inventors... At Wanted Design, I had a nice chat with Joe Doucet, a NYC designer, artist, architect, and furniture designer. Yep, he crosses many disciplines of design and his mantra is "Everything communicates" ....where each design is composed of layers of meaning...

MoD Must Have: Ice Lighting by Lianne Gold

 Lianne Gold - ICE lighting

Sculptor Lianne Gold has always been passionate about glass. Inspired by the intricate details of 20th Century Italian glass masters, Gold's creative pulse charged her to create her own gorgeous glass collection... Her designs demonstrate strong, elegant and pure geometric forms with wonderful attention to material and detail, a  homage to the Italian masters that have been her inspiration. Gold joined Ralph Pucci International and you can see her creations at their New York showroom.

I love her sculptural sconce beauties called Ice...handcrafted luxury that combines oil rubbed bronze, and translucent sculpted glass that actually looks like frozen ice....brava! and the geometric metal corner details that hold the glass in place are really impeccable.

A knockout!

A MODERN TREEHOUSE MADE OUT OF GLASS

The Tower House, designed by Manhattan based architect Thomas Gluck is MY FAVE architecture pick of the week. The modern solution to a tree-house is the architects' vacation home in Ulster County, New York about 100 miles outside of NYC.  Imagine living within a lush landscape and totally immersed in the woods.  You would be loving views and feeling your blood-pressure go down, down, down. I love that the glass-clad design is inverted- bedrooms are below and the living spaces are upstairs. What is so impressive is the dining room is cantilevered 30 feet from the ground!

Free Advice Friday: Back-painted glass

Hey M,
I hate my mosaic kitchen backsplash! Any ideas for a crisp and clean backsplash?
Ann from Boston

Hi Ann,

I love Back-painted glass! It's a contemporary hot trend today where low lead or plate glass is painted on the back and then sealed or baked to give a luminous glow that is stunning! It is custom-templated to fit your backsplash, has no grout lines, easy to clean and is offered in limitless spectrums of color. The one drawback.. its not cheapo! Besides backsplashes, it is ideal for architectural elements such as walls and countertops. See some beautiful installations:

Thinkglass

Say Ooooh! to these glass beauties from Quebec based Thinkglass. They create glass that combines exceptional depth and repetitive textures with LED technology that will blow your mind!! The texture of the glass is so powerful that it reminds you of natural stratified rock. See these pics below:

Using a proprietary method of fusing glass in their custom made kilns, their unique glass slabs can go up to 4-inches thick and have a variety of edges, textures and underlayments. I haven't seen glass countertops like this before!
4 inch thick countertop
Reminiscent of Bora Bora's luminescent waters where I vacationed on my honeymoon, I fell in love with this gorgeous crystal colored thick slab of glass that glows from within. To get this radiant glow, Thinkglass embeds powerful LED's.

As we all know today's LED technology provides a variety of light colors and can create light shows via a remote control with special effects such as flashing and fading lights. Imagine entertaining guests in a dim-lit setting and all of a sudden your table transforms into a kaleidoscope of colors? How cool!

To top it all off, their glass is non-porous, scratch resistant and easy to clean. Perfectly chic and functional for a residential application! Pricing will range from depending on the size of your project.
