Steam, Lighting and Laminate Design impacts lives #Designhounds 2017

Last Monday, I darted into the city to meet up with #designhounds to embrace what is hot on the New York design scene. I started off at a breakfast with Mr. Steam at the delicious Landmarc and then shot off to the ICFF, North America's premier platform for global design to meet up with Hubbardton Forge and Wilsonart

Breakfast with #designhounds : Catherine Avery, Amy Wax, Christine Kohut, Veronika Miller, Michele Alfano, Deborah Von Donop, Laurie Gorelick, Patti Johnson and Martha Orellana

I enjoyed my day and noticed some overlap from brand to brand. I saw how each brand explored how the intersection of materials, design and technology can impact lives on a day to day basis.

NEW-Mr. Steam Linear SteamHead

Martha, Mr. Steam's VP of Marketing spoke about how "wellness should be a way life." There are so many benefits of steam and how we designers can educate our clients to understand how steam can promote a happier and healthier lifestyle. Why not "feel good" on a day to day basis versus the sporadic 'treat yourself' weekend to the spa?

I have previously met Martha on the Modenus -Blog Tour California where I viscerally experienced the steam experience with TALA clay all over my face. I walked away understanding that there are major health and beauty advantages to steam-bathing that can fit into a well designed life.

You know how awesome you feel from a spa steam afterwards! Your pores open up and your skin feels smoother; your muscles loosen up and you unwind; your sinuses clear and you breathe easier. The release of toxins in your body from steam also helps headaches and joint inflammation...the potential of steam is tremendous! Steam is therapy....

Mr. Steam's intelligent operating system iSteam offers an array of options with easy touch screen navigation: add music, aroma (aromasteam) , colored lighting (chromasteam) and/or control the temperature in your very own shower. Mr. Steams online virtual spa system makes it easy. Get a simple system or all the bells and whistles. You can see the pricing on their website as you select your options.

Now Light Benefits....

Not only steam but also light has the ability to transform one's life. Hubbardton Forge, a lighting manufacturer in Vermont USA showcased new lighting collections that incorporate crystals and color. From the ancient Egyptian times of King Tut to the modern masters of Cartier, crystals have been prized for their beauty and their healing and spiritual properties. Light passing through crystals start a vibration within the minerals and will resonate with the faceted patterns of the crystal. I really believe that this reflection and refraction can help us to restore balance and stress in our lives.

The Artemis LED pendant

I would say Hubbardton Forge lighting is synonymous with craftsmanship where crystal design is taken to the next level. Each design is specifically crafted to display crystals like they were jewels in a jewelry setting as shown in the Artemis LED pendant above. How beautiful, right?

Solitude LED Pendant

Each crystal in the Solitude LED Pendant rises from an LED light guide so light is reflected and refracted. This pendant can be hand crafted up to 18'-0" long. What a statement this fixture makes over a dining room table!!

Color too affects one's mood and how we feel in a space. I loved The Cumulus light fixture below, its fun, colorful funkiness has some kinetic movement too. Shown as a floor lamp. Go to my instagram to see the video: @michelealfanodesign

Now Laminate...

Wilsonart, a leading manufacturer of engineered surfacing developed Wilsonart Challenges, an innovative Student Chair Competition celebrating laminate with a "borders, boundaries and mashup theme" for 2017. Each entry from the San Diego State University explores a resolution of life between extremes by using patterns from the Wilsonart Laminate collection. Grace Jeffers, a design historian and materials expert told us #designhounds that the program is incorporated into the students curriculum and there was a winner and 5 runner ups.

The competition itself fosters inspiration, innovation with a hands on opportunity where the students actually build their design.  We saw all the cool designs at ICFF! Besides the students learning and understanding the properties of laminate, they most importantly learned how material emphasizes a message. Design has a way of touching a nerve and impacting lives....

Here were some of my faves:

Megan Acera. Chair:Joyful Frustration.
Frustration from one's desires results in a happy resolution as evident in her fragmentation and color choice

Matthew John Bacer -winner of competition. Chair:A piece of Tlaltecuhtli.
He reflects on the use of appropriation of a famous stone monolith in Mexico city. The use of and color of laminate looks like real stone.

Anna Karreskog- Chair Waves- using her engineering knowledge, she celebrates the endless succession of San Diego's ocean's waves.

Thankyou to Veronika Miller of Modenus and #designhounds, Mr. Steam, Wilsonart and Hubbardton Forge for a great day!!

TOP 10 Statement Lighting at the Architectural Digest Show 2016

To set the tone of a room, choose a dramatic lighting fixture. I love a light that can be a conversation piece. On the floor of Architectural Digest Home show 2016, a wide array of impressive hanging fixtures and sconces successfully caught my eye. Each one unique but each used scale differently to create strong sculptural fixtures with a real impact. Here are my top 10 faves from the show:

One Kings Lane: Light Up Your Look

Lighting to a room is like that piece of jewelry that pulls your outfit together. It can transform a room from amazing to spectacular. One Kings Lane asked me to think about my favorite chandelier from their site and my favorite piece of statement jewelry as part of their Light Up Your Look campaign. I decided to get a bit nostalgic and pull out my Mother's beautiful vintage 14kt gold charm bracelet that she passed down to me. Besides holding meaning to me, the gold vintage finish paired with the intricate detailing prove to be a perfect piece of inspiration for this challenge.

My charm bracelet

If love is in the details, then the Alice Chandelier and Light Pendant Chandelier by Crystorama are perfect. I love the layering and connections giving exceptional texture and dimension, just like the charms in my Mothers bracelet. Both fixtures are sophisticated and timeless and can equally work in a modern or traditional decor.

And the gold finish on the Antique Gold 6-Light Crystorama fixture couldn't be more glamorous. I used to be more of a silver person but there is something about gold that is so luxurious. It is an effective way to bring on the bling in an interior.

Go to One Kings Lane for more chandelier inspiration!

Wanted Design Lighting Experience 2014

Blackbody convex mirror

2014 Wanted Design shines brightly this year with all the amazing designs! It is the creative and dynamic destination for the international design community during NYCxDesign located in the landmark Terminal stores building on 11th Avenue. The 360 degree experience had a multitude of engaging installations, and memorable products for design lovers. It was the lighting that started the show and led my eye down the tunnel with inspiring work from creative minds! Come see.....

Blackbody showcased some beauties with their convex mirror and OLED chandeliers (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) that can be used for inside and outdoor installations. This OLED technology sculpts and manipulates pure light to create a constellation of awe.  (image above)

Furniture designer David Trubridge has devised some thrilling light fixtures all based off a simple shape that connects together. The repetition creates some unexpected patterns and wonderful lighting affects. The fixture above is called Kina and its materials are Bamboo plywood with frosted polycarbonate.

Trubridge's felt fixture also acts as an acoustic device.

La Cage by Mick Ricereto

ILEX launched "The Portfolio", a collaborative partnership which showcased six pre-eminent and emerging American designers, three of which I had the pleasure to meet along with CEO Alan Indursky. They each designed distinct architectural lighting with different solutions.  Above is La Cage by Mick Ricereto. Great sleekenss to its industrial cage - is made out of plated steel and opal glass.

Michael Walk's Timbale

Love the elegant and simplistic lines of the Michael Walk's Timbale. He explained to me that the shape is great for hotel installations due to its depth. It comes in aluminum and matte acrylic.

CEO of Ilex Alan Indursky & Laura Kirar. Libro Multi-pendant

The stunner was Laura Kirar's Libro Multi-pendant. It just shimmers. The amber glass made in Milano takes on an interesting shape and its brass hardware and gold flecks envelopes the light around it. Laura told me she envisions the fixture for large installations and I totally agree with her! A large grouping would be just fabulous!

Socket Pocket, a proud partnership of designers in Seattle Washington has a variety of cool modern fixtures with great uses of materials. The Spun fixture is a natural beauty with a beautiful copper shade accessorized with wood, copper and powder coated aluminum. Stokk and Strung below both offer versatility and can be clustered.

Product and Fashion designer Anastasia Su and Architect Martin Lesjak have partnered as 13 & 9, an interdisciplinary design collective. Besides the amazing jewelry, and handbags they design, 13 & 9 has created the Rock collection, an amazing modern light collection made from razor thin natural slate stone veneer. The stones natural variations assure a one-of-a-kind piece. The fixtures can stand alone or be grouped together.

Designers Stephanie and ToddMacAllen of molo design create installations related to spaced making. Their could softlights hung over their softwall and soft seating creating an entryway for visitors of the show.

Artisan Francois Azambourg has launched a line of furniture and objects all handmade. His LED Hanging Lamp called Very Nice echoed structural bridge construction. It is laser-cut and glued with 9mm birch faced plywood structure. Polyester is stretched and wrapped by hand as well.

Designer Oki Sato of Nendo widens our thoughts of what the shower experience can be. For Axor, Nendo has developed a shower fixture as a lamp. What we know to be a fixture in a livingroom will now be translated into the bathroom experience.

MoD Must Haves: Hand-Crafted Luxury Lighting by Urban Electric Co.

MoD Must Haves
craft, tactile, novel
for lighting lovers

I love the idea that things are made in the United States and are made by hand...by highly skilled artisans who craft unbelievable things..... pure artisanal making ....can you hear the hammer, hammer of metal?;  A recognized contributor to American manufacturing is the Urban Electric Co., a creative company that prides itself on uncompromising craftsmanship, original design and impeccable service. With a collection of over 300 fixtures, this unique lighting/design/manufacturing company based in Charleston, South Carolina is not only passionate about what they do but strive for extraordinary quality. That is attainable because Urban Electric Co. has pure control over their own manufacturing.

the 'L' fixture

Their own original designs can simply be described as imaginative, classic and unique.

Michael Amato; Cube

With a background in fashion design, visual merchandising and interiors, Creative Director Michael Amato leads the overall design direction and works closely with outside designers who introduce new collections. Mr. Amato's own collection is very original with simplistic, clean lines.  One of my faves is the Cosy fixture:

I love Cosy's pure geometry and how the light bulb is connected and suspended within its elegant volume. The yellow and blue colors are fab too. All of Urban Electric's fixtures are  constructed with the finest materials of metal and glass. You can customize each design with different type of metals (antique brass, black, white, hewn brass, painted, bronze, polished. Glass nickel) and glass (clear, colored glass, etched, german new antique, ice, seeded, translucent antique). The design possibilities are endless....Take a look of more of Amato's designs:

I'm loving the Urban Smokebell that comes in clear, antiqued or etched antiqued mirror...the proportions are perfect over a kitchen island..

Punch

The punch fixture comes as a sconce or a pendant. Love the texture and curve of the glass. What a fabulous fixture for a makeup area for the queen bee...

 Malplaquet

Are you lovin the Malplaquet pendant..ahhh! This past year NYC based designer Steven Gambrel has collaborated with the Urban Electric Co team to create custom fixtures inspired by the American vernacular. Mr. Gambrell's collection honestly brings attention to the joints and connections... I  relish the heftiness of his fixtures and the strong industrial nod to the utility for ships and factories. The Malplaquet is my favorite. The aluminum body can be powder coated in an endless array of colors. How fun! The fitting detail at the top is quite beautiful too!

I didn't realize at first but there is a lot going on in Gambrel's collection of fixtures. The intricate detailing over a large scale is quite complex and I would assume difficult to manufacture. The  Houghton and West Wycombe are stunners!. Bravo, Urban Electric Co for amazing craftsmanship!
